Taking a look back at another week of news from Cupertino, this week’s Apple Loop covers the new iOS 8.1.3 version in the wild, Christmas hints and tips for iOS, the iPhone 6 vs the Galaxy S5, technology challenges religion, replacing the iPad with the iPhone 6 Plus, drones over Cupertino, iTunes on Tumblr, and automatic security updates for OSX.
Apple Loop is here to remind you of a few of the very many discussions that have happened around Apple over the last seven days (and you can read our weekly digest of Android news here on Forbes).
Another iPhone Update Is Out There, iOS 8.1.3. Being Tested
Apple is planning another intermediate release of iOS before the expected Q1 release of iOS 8.2Forbes’ Gordon Kelly looks over the evidence of iOS 8.1.3, a minor point release expected to address some issues around Wi-Fi, battery life, and BlueTooth. The main pointer? MacRumors spotting the 8.1.3 version popping up in its web traffic logs:
The number of hits from iOS 8.1.3 remains low, numbering just a few dozen in total from Apple’s networks. A view of overall traffic from iOS 8.1.3 devices shows a clearer upward trend aside from a weekend dip, based on a much larger sample size. While there are more likely to be faked identifiers in the general pool of web visitors, the clear trend of increasing usage and visits coming from Apple’s own networks have historically been reliable indicators of Apple’s development work.
Some Christmas Hints And Tips
With so many people receiving new technology at Christmas, it’s likely that many will have new iOS devices. I’ve put together a bundle of hints for people starting out with a new iPhone or a new iPad.
The iOS and Android Champions Take Each Other On
If you’re looking for a rumble in the festive jungle, look no further than Apple’s iPhone 6 and Samsung’s Galaxy S5. The two heavyweight smartphones of this generation are well matched, and even with the five month lead in sales that Samsung had, the iPhone 6 has proven to be the commercial winner.
What about the critical side of things? Gordon Kelly pits the champions of iOS and Android against each other in a number of match-ups, including display technology, hardware, software, camera, battery life, and design:
Then comes the Galaxy S5’s trump card: it is both water and dust resistant with IP67 certification. Most usefully this means the Galaxy S5 can be left in up to one metre of water for up to 30 minutes. An ugly plastic flap on the power port must be shut for this, but it remains a major feather in the cap for the S5. Not only is it great for protecting against water damage that would kill the iPhone 6, but it is remarkably liberating being able to answer a phone call or adjust your music in the shower!
Ultimately most people picking up both phones in a shop are likely to favour the iPhone 6, but when it comes to living with both long term it is an extremely close call.
